Advancing Security in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs): Challenges and Emerging Solutions

Prof. Latha Tamilselvan
B. S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute Of Science And Technology, India

Abstract: MANETs are increasingly essential in modern communication systems, offering rapid and flexible connectivity for critical applications such as disaster response, military operations, and IoT ecosystems. However, the decentralized, dynamic, and infrastructure-less nature of MANETs inherently exposes them to unique security threats, including node impersonation, eavesdropping, and disruptive attacks such as blackhole, rushing, and wormhole attacks. Traditional security methods often fail to adequately address these emerging vulnerabilities due to resource constraints, mobility, and scalability issues specific to MANET environments. This talk explores how to eliminate or mitigate issues such as Black hole attack, Rushing Attack, Wormhole attack, Impersonation, and recent advances in securing MANETs, focusing on innovative solutions AI-based intrusion detection systems, blockchain-enabled trust frameworks, and lightweight cryptographic protocols. The presentation will cover case studies, threat landscapes, and future research directions to enhance the resilience of MANETs against sophisticated cyber threats. Attendees will gain insights into how MANET security intersects with emerging trends in communications and computing, ensuring robust, adaptive, and scalable networks for the future.
