Cyprus University of Technology
Faculty of Geotechnical Sciences and the Environment

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected]

Aim
Biological systems present a big challenge for mathematical modeling. This is due to several factors. The nature of the biological systems themselves, i.e. being multiphase, multicomponent complex systems, often denying strict and deterministic mathematical modeling analysis.
Another factor is the attitude of the colleagues of Biology, an attitude shared also by Chemists. Without being innocent of Mathematics we could say that they don’t feel comfortable with this branch of Science appreciated so much in other field, as for example in Physics and Engineering.
This session has the ambition to fill , to some extent, of course the gap.

Faculty of Applied Informatics

E-mail: [email protected]

Aim
During recent decades, the role of informatics in system and control theory and practice has been rapidly increased. Both the realms, theoretical and application one are affected. Not only experts in the field can concur with us that products of computer technology are used in everyday life in a huge scale. In system, control, or process engineering, devices like PLC, IPC, microcontroller kits or intelligent computer boards with advanced operating systems constitute an integral part of manufacturing and industrial processes. Advances in theory of informatics have not been fully implemented in process control design until recently. However, many complex technological processes such as nonlinear, delayed, non-minimum phase ones, multidimensional or hybrid ones are hardly controllable by conventional control methods. Therefore, advanced modern control strategies including algebraic methods, optimal or predictive control principles, to name just a few, have been investigated to deal with the those problems. These methodologies, however, requires the utilization of elements of optimization or artificial intelligence - the role of which is naturally growing. Here is a space to implement the knowledge of e.g. neural networks, genetic algorithms, deterministic chaos etc. From this perspective, both, theoretical and application, contributions combining the informatics and system (control) issues are useful and desirable and highly welcome for the special session.

35) Title: Planck distribution equation (PDE) applicable to Physics, Biology, Glotometrics, Econophysics, Drug Discovery, and Personalized Medicine.
Organizer-Chairman: Prof. Sungchul Ji,, Rutgers University, USA
Email: [email protected]

Aim
In 2008, a new mathematical equation referred to as the Planckian distribution equation (PDE) was discovered at Rutgers [S. Ji (2012). Molecular Theory of the Living Cell: Concepts, Molecular Mechanisms, and Biomedical Applications. Springer, new York, Chapters 11 and 12, PDF at http://www.conformon.net under Publications > Book Chapters]. PDE was derived from the Planck's blackbody radiation equation by replacing its universal constants and temperature with 3 free parameters and has been found to fit long-tailed histograms generated in diverse fields of natural and human sciences (e.g., protein folding, single-molecule enzymology, genome-wide mRNA metabolism in yeast and human breast tissues, T-cell receptor diversity, fMRI signals from human brains, stressed-induced neuroanatomical changes in rat brains, decision-time measurements in humans, word-length frequency distributions in speech and written texts, and US annual income distributions in 1996 and 2013). In all cases studied so far,the rising phase of PDE has been found to coincide with the ascending portion of the associated Gaussian distribution law, indicating a close theoretical connection between the Gaussian and Planckian processes, the latter being defined as any physicochemicalc processes that generate numerical data fitting PDE. This conjecture is supported by the fact that PDE can be obtained from the Gaussian equation by transforming the random variable, x, of the latter non-linearly while keeping its y value constant. Since any deviation of PDE from its associated Gaussian distribution can be interpreted as a measure of non-randomness, or organization, the binary logarithm of the ratio between the AUC (area under the curve) of the Planckian distribution over the AUC of the Gaussian distribution has been postulated to be a new measure of organization called the Planckian information, IP, which may be viewed as the opposite of the Boltzmann- Gibbs entropy, S, a measure of disorder or disorganization. The ability of PDE to quantify organization or structure may find many important applications in basic biology and applied biomedical and social sciences, including drug discovery research, personalized medicine, and speech and text analyses.
In addition, PDE may contribute to resolving the current controversy concerning the interpretation of the polarized cosmological microwave background radiation, since PDE has been found to fit the polarization data only partially, perhaps because the polarization data were contaminated by the randomizing effect of the galactic dust.
The purpose of this special session is to bring together experts from various fields of sciences (to which PDE has been found to apply so far) in order to define the common principles, mechanisms, and theories underlying PDE processes in both natural and human sciences.

Chief of CeRITT (Research Centre for Technology transfer and Innovation) Email: [email protected]

Aim:
With the growing competition in a globalized world, universities are seen as the key organizations and supporters in the national innovation system (Audretsch et al. 2006). Thus, national and regional policy makers try to set incentives for innovations and to increase the innovative potential of universities and to use it effectively. A large and diverse literature analyzes the importance of universities within the regional and national innovation system (Mowery and Sampat 2005; Cosh and Hughes 2010; Audretsch et al. 2011), often highlighting the necessity of separate and specialized organizational units to manage industry–university collaborations (Link et al. 2008; Fritsch and Lukas 2001). Within this process, TTO are seen as the institutionalized way to transport and canalize the ideas, inventions and innovations of academic researchers into the (regional) industry and society (van Ledebur 2008; Meoli et al. 2011; Gonzŕles- Pernia et al. 2011). Thus, given the importance attached to Technology Transfer Office (TTO) within this process, policy makers and university management should be interested in the performance differences of TTO.

Engineers of Sfax, Tunisia.
Email: [email protected]

Aim
This special session constitutes a forum where an effective exchange of knowledge and
experience amongst active researchers in various theoretical and applied areas of parametric
and state estimation for nonlinear systems in control will take place. This event will provide
the opportunity, for worldwide researchers and practitioners, to share and discuss together the
latest progress achieved in main developments and trends on state estimation methods applied
to industrial processes control.
The state and parameters estimation is solved through system identification which aims to
build mathematical models of dynamical systems based on the knowledge of systems data.
Usually, the dimension of the vector of output signals is smaller than the dimension of the
corresponding vector of states; therefore it is necessary to develop estimation techniques,
known as observer design, dealing with on-line state estimation. These estimators or
observers of both, states and/or uncertainties, play key roles during monitoring and control of
processes. We hope that our session will highlight novelties in this research area.

Aim:
The amount of data in the world has been exploding, about 50% a year and analyzing large data sets will become a key basis of competition, creating new waves of productivity growth, innovation. Researchers and policy makers are currently at the beginning to realize the potential for channeling the different type of data into actionable information that can be used to identify needs, provide services, predict and prevent crises.
